Katie grew up by the water and has always been around boats ranging in size from a minifish to a commercial shrimp vessel. Her dad owned and operated several shrimp and crab boats along the eastern coast of the US. While an undergraduate, Katie spent a few summers aboard a working shrimp boat that was conducting research on sea turtles. This experience provided Katie with knowledge of working vessels and the maintenance necessary to keep them running, not to mention things learned merely by living on the water for weeks at a time!
The first sailboat Katie ever owned was a minifish, which she has been sailing since the age of 5. Though used by a core of 7 kids, for more than 20 years, this boat is still in decent shape and Katie is working on her to make her once again solid.
Growing up on a small farm in coastal Georgia, Katie has learned the value of maintaining equipment. Tractors, mowers, bailers, and many other pieces of farm equipment had to be winterized and dewinterized each season. From this, Katie gained basic knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines as well as many other types of machine.
Katie's experience with larger sailing vessels began in 2002 when Mickey purchased Bahia, a 38 foot Cabo Rico. Being an older boat, 1980 vintage, she was in need of some work. The project of removing the teak decks and refinishing with nonskid quickly ensued. This small project quickly grew into a much larger ordeal including removing fiberglass and replacing core, removing cabinetry in the cabin in order to reach the deck hardware, replacing a bulkhead while the cabinetry was removed, as well as several other 'minor' side projects.
On the side, Katie is now a graduate student at the University of Maryland studying marine biology and ecotoxicology.
With the establishment of SRT Marine, Katie and Mickey have pledged to undertake only those jobs which we know we can optimally complete in a timely fashion. In the preceding year, both Katie and Mickey have experienced the difficulties of getting work completed on a vessel in a timely and satisfactory fashion. SRT Marine is well aware of its limitations and therefore some general contracting will be utilized in order to complete a project in the most reasonable, skilled, and optimal manner. Our business is committed to working quickly, effectively, and efficiently at the most affordable price we can offer in order to provide optimal service to all our customers.
